Custody evaluations are performed both privately as well as at the behest of county officials. Custody evaluations involve most individuals in the life of the child and may include parents, paramours of the parents, and siblings as well as step-siblings, half-siblings and grandparents and other caregivers. Custody evaluations can be quite comprehensive in terms of both the number of individuals assessed and length of time involved. The mental status and parenting skills of the parents are evaluated and determination is predicated upon the best interests of the child. Recommendations are given for primary or joint custody.
